Cruise visas and travel documents

A cruise does not remove border rules. Passengers must meet the entry and transit requirements for their nationality, flights, embarkation port and every relevant destination.

Quick answer

Check passport validity and visas before paying a non-refundable deposit. Use government and consular sources, then confirm the cruise line’s boarding rules. A visa may be required even if you plan to stay on the ship.

  • Passport validity rules often extend beyond the final day of travel.
  • Flight connections can introduce separate transit requirements.
  • A cruise line may deny boarding when documents are incomplete.
  • Photocopies do not replace original travel documents.
  • Rules can change after booking, so verify them again before departure.

Passport checks

Confirm expiry, blank-page requirements, damage and whether the name matches every ticket. Children need their own valid documents.

Visa responsibility

Requirements depend on nationality and route, not on the language of this website. Check every country through its government, embassy or authorised visa service. Do not rely only on old forum posts.

Flights and transit

A connection through another country may require a transit visa or airport document. Check both the outbound and return journeys, especially when using separate tickets.

Carry secure copies

  • Keep digital and paper copies separate from the originals.
  • Record emergency and insurer contact details.
  • Leave a copy with a trusted person at home.
  • Never publish document photographs or booking numbers online.

Frequently asked

Do I need a visa if I stay on the ship?
Possibly. Some countries require all passengers on the manifest to hold a visa regardless of whether they go ashore.
Will the cruise line arrange my visa?
Usually not. It may provide general information, but the passenger remains responsible for obtaining the correct documents.
When should I check the rules?
Before booking, again when final payment is due, and once more shortly before departure.
